Profile: Ripe Strawberry, Pomegranate, Toffee
Producer: Susana Hurtado Inga
Region: San Jose de Lourdes
Importer: Falcon Specialty
The San Jose de Lourdes district is situated in the northern region of Peru, an isolated region with a distinct cool climate and high rainfall. It's here that Susana Hurtado Inga owns and runs her small 1.5 hectare farm. The farm solely produces the Caturra vbariety, known for its high yield and typically sweet profile, under the shade of banana and native fruit trees. Susana picks all her coffee herself and with the help of her family, who also own coffee farms in the area. Due to a lack of infrastructure and space, the crop is dried at a neighbour’s farm; parchment is dried from 40% to 11% before being shipped to a dry mill owned by our good friends Falcon Specialty in Jaen. Falcon has worked hard in this region over the last few years, to help improve quality and therefore prices for local producers.
This is our first ever coffee from the origin of Peru and we're big fans! What's most prominent about the profile of this coffee is the presence of ripe strawberry, bringing a soft acidity and delicate sweetness. Juicy mango adds a brighter acidity. This is rounded off by a deep, malty toffee sweetness as the cup cools. Lingering on the finish is the bitter sweet element of blood orange and grapefruit.
