The Ndundu factory is situated in the southern highland area of Gatundu, Kiambu County, and roughly an hour’s drive from the capital of Nairobi. The Ndundu factory is owned by the Thiririka Farmers’ Cooperative Society, who owns two other factories in the region. The Thiririka FCS has approximately 2600 active members, of which 800 deliver their crop to the Ndundu factory. Each farmer owns less than a hectare of land, which they attend to with extreme diligence under agronomic practices required by the co-op. Affiliate members are required to source seeds through the Kenya Coffee Research Institute, plant and cultivate crop in accordance with co-op guidelines, as well as fieldwork practices as advised in training programs through both the co-op and the ministry of agriculture in Kenya. The co-op employees a field committee who undertake farm visits and check practices, alongside encouraging and helping farmers who have abandoned their coffee production to return to it. All of this combines to produce high quality and consistent coffees from the co-op. This lot was sourced by Falcon Specialty, who set up their own Kenyan company to be able to bid at auction directly. This step skips the large multinationals who are the main buyers at the Kenya auctions, increasing the supply chain efficiency and is another step in the larger work of removing the transparency limitations of the Kenyan auction system. Expect tropical notes of guava, raspberry jam sweetness and a vanilla finish.
